5 Easy Steps to Creating an Online Memorial
for Your Loved One
What is an Online Memorial?

Thankfully, an online memorial provides a way to give your loved ones the sort of lasting memorial they deserve, while giving all of the family and friends a place to post their own remembrances, and grieve together.

Here are 5 easy steps to help you create an online memorial for your loved one:
1. Make sure you choose a site that preserves your ownership of your memories!
One of the dark secrets of online memorial websites and social networks is that very few give you copyright, or ownership, of your photos and stories. Unless there is a copyright notice at the bottom of your page, specifically stating that your material is “(c) 2007 Your Name”, everything you post on that site automatically becomes the property of the site -- not you. They can use it for whatever they want, or they can delete it, or they can change it, etc. without telling you.
Unless the copyright notice is there in your name, it isn’t yours!
2. Will it ever be deleted?
Not all websites are forever. Sure, you can create and host your own website, but doing that requires that you pay monthly and/or yearly fees. For example, a domain name (yoursitename.com is your “domain”) costs anywhere from $7 to $30 per year. If you don’t renew it every year, your website will be taken offline, and someone else could steal your domain name.
Website hosting (which is where your website files are stored) usually costs between $3 and $10 per month. If you don’t pay for your hosting, your website will be taken offline and erased from the hosting provider’s computer - and if you don’t have a backup of your memorial website files, you will never get your memorial website back.
There are a number of memorial websites out there.
However, we recommend Web Biographies:
